Amazing large pendant/brooch combination piece.
A Mayan face with a headdress in silver and enamel. This is really a fabulous statement piece.
The design is black enamel & champleve style enamel & sterling silver.
On the back, there is a pin and 3 different loops to convert to a pendant necklace.
Champlevé enamel is created with indented areas that are carved or cast into the metal and then filled with the enamel. After the enamel has been fired, the object is then filed and polished, leaving the non-indented areas without enamel. The name Champlevé comes from the French word meaning ‘raised field’.
I believe this piece is called 'Maya Profile'. It is featured in the book: "Margot Van Voorhies The Art of Mexican Enamelwork", by Penny Morrill for Schiffer, Pg. 117."
Also featured in "SIlver Seduction" pg 101.
